If you’ve noticed your toenails yellowing, you likely have a condition called onychomycosis, more commonly known as toenail fungus. The yellow toenails associated with onychomycosis are actually keratin debris trapped between the nail plate and nail bed. Onychomycosis is caused by certain types of fungi that feed on keratin, the material which make up our nails. The waste products that the fungi create are called keratin debris, and this is what is causing your yellow toenails.

If you have yellowing toenails, but you haven’t yet experienced other symptoms such as your toenails becoming thick, brittle, or crumbly, you have likely detected the infection before it has had a chance to spread too much. Consider yourself lucky. While most people infected with toenail fungus are usually just concerned with the ugly appearance of yellow toenails caused by toenail fungus, if left to spread, your onychomycosis infection can become dystrotrophic onychomycosis,. This is when onychomycosis infects the entire nail. At this stage, there is a serious risk of permanent, irreversable damage to the nail.

Onychomycosis Treatment

There are two primary types of medication for onychomycosis treatment. One is with topical solutions applied directly to the area infected with toenail fungus, and the other is to take an oral medication that absorbs anti-fungal agents into the bloodstream, which is then attacks the infected area through the circulatory system. Some over the counter products come with both an oral and topical medication, which accelerates treatment.

Additionally, there are prescription products and over the counter products for onychomycosis. While some of the prescription products are quite powerful, these drugs also can be quite expensive, costing up to $100 per week and requiring regular blood tests. This is because of the potential for nasty side effects, including liver damage. Other unpleasant side effects include nausea/vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, and mild abdominal pain. The course of treatment usually lasts between 2-3 months.

Fortunately, there are several over the counter products that can cure onychomycosis without the drastic cost and potential for serious side effects of some of the prescription treatment options. Look for products containing anti-fungal ingredients such as tea tree oil, or jojoba oil. As mentioned earlier, solutions that can offer not only a topical solution, but an oral one as well can accelerate recovery and improve the chances of successful treatment.

If you experience any pain due to toenail fungus, or if over the counter treatments don’t appear to be working, be sure to promptly contact your physician. Your onychomycosis may be too advanced and may require prescription treatment. Otherwise, you can usually expect to goodbye to yellowing toenails and onychomycosis within 4-12 weeks with an effective over the counter toenail fungus remedy.
